Edition 61: 5 ways to reduce your personal carbon footprint for Earth Day šŸ‘£

ā€œThere is still a window of time. Nature can win if we give her a chance.ā€

– Dr. Jane Goodall

Happy Earth Day, Daybreaker Fam!

Before we dive in fully, be sure to scroll down for our Earth Day-inspired Mischief Mission. We’re reducing our carbon footprints this week (hint: itĀ involves bamboo toothbrushes, clotheslines and more bikes). šŸš²The stats out thereĀ are sobering, but we’re inspired to rise up by creating more sustainable versions of ourselves. How ’bout we do it together?

Ok, onwards! This week, we warmed up Amsterdam for King’s Day.Ā In the spirit of mischief, we danced underground, beneath the city’s busiest railway. We even heard a train or two between beat drops. šŸ˜‚ #UndergroundDanceParty

Current status: party-hopping on three U.S. college campuses. Yesterday, we shared Daybreaker CAMPUS with students at University of Minnesota and Penn State University. Today, we’re back at Wharton UPENN (our second time there!). šŸŽ‰Ā It’s been nothing short of inspiring, watching our future leaders sweat and connect in a way that in prior years, seemed unlikelyĀ for the college experience. Thanks to everyone who’s shown so much support for this movement of ours,Ā we’re slowly (but surely) shifting the “norm” to something much more uplifting. āœØ

All right, fam. Keep scrolling for this week’s Dancefloor Tale, ourĀ special Earth Day Noodles Edition, upcoming events, and tunes. šŸŽ§

With love & mischief,
// Team Daybreaker

āœØAND AS IT TURNED OUT, THERE WASĀ ANOTHER WAYāœØ

My favorite thing about Daybreaker isnā€™t something that can be summed up in one story. I found the community during the summer of 2016. I was midway through a commitment to a year of no alcohol because I had wanted to push myself and find new ways to have fun. I was bored at work, and looking for fun things to do soberā€¦and what do you know? Daybreaker Week comes to my attention. Me, being an adventurer, just said ā€œF-yesā€ and bought passes for 3 events during the week.

The week arrives andĀ I goĀ to the House of Yes for my first Daybreakerā€¦and it was AWESOME. šŸŽ‰ I doĀ partner yoga with a mother who was a lot older than me, then we all danceĀ like crazy. I even get in the dance circle, wearing my favorite pair of sweatpants, and my treasured black Metallica shirt toĀ danceĀ and rollĀ (literally, I hit the ground and roll) out of it.

I felt so liberated that day. This idea Iā€™d been carrying since Iā€™d graduated from collegeĀ that there had to be a more fun way to liveĀ withoutĀ depending on getting messed up ā€” it turned out to be real. And possible. I was so inspired seeing everyone in that room going hard. I was inspired by the courage of people getting up on stage to dance, too. It was just the most unbelievably crazy awesome thing I’d ever seen.

Fast forward to a year and a half later, and now Iā€™m one of the Mischief Makers, spending way more time than I ever thought IĀ would picking out outfits to show off my spirit for the next party hahahahaha. I love it. I really do.āœØ

With love & mischief,
// Matthew

šŸ²EARTH DAY NOODLESšŸ²

Every day, Mother EarthĀ providesĀ a home for 7.6 billion humans, about 10 quintillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000)Ā insects, 20 quintillionĀ animals and 390,900 species of plants (with trillions more we don’t even know about yet).

Ummm, we’re feelin’ like we owe Mama Earth a ratherĀ rad spa package for EarthĀ Day this year.šŸ™Œ OR….

What would happen if we allĀ implemented one tiny sustainable change? And then repeated it. Every day. Then what if we shared our new habit with 5 friends, who then shared with 5 friends and so on? This could be yet another way theĀ power of communityĀ can come together to inspireĀ radical change.

So! Mischief Mission, Mother Earth EditionšŸŒ ā€” pick something from the list below. Act on it. Share it with 5Ā friends.

4 EASY WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT FOR EARTH DAY TODAY šŸ‘£

// Unplug your devices when not in use.Ā Even if your electronic is powered down, as long as the cord is in the socket ā€” it’s using energy. Every year in the U.S. alone, “vampire power” drains up $19 billion in energy. So. Computers, phones, toaster, anything ā€” unplug it anytime it’s not actually in use. šŸ”Œ

// Order less takeout + use a bamboo toothbrush.Ā These are easy ways to reduce the amount of plastic you use.Ā Instead of ordering takeout (that comes in plastic errythang), get cozy with some friends, try your hand at a new recipe. Then show off your cool new plastic-less toothbrush.šŸ˜

// Line Dry Your Clothes.Ā Our clothes dryers are one of the most energy-consuming appliances in existence. Running oneĀ is the equivalent of turning on 225 light bulbs for an hour. Eeek. What’s an easy way to spare your clothes from contributing to your carbon footprint? Line dry ’em.Ā I mean, it’s kinda more fun that way, anyway.Ā šŸ‘•šŸ‘ššŸ‘—

// Bike, walk, share a ride!Ā Every gallon of gas burned from your car releases 24 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere.Ā Transportation is accountingĀ forĀ nearly a thirdĀ of the annual carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. Sooo opt to power walk the 10 blocks instead of flagging down thatĀ taxi. Rent a bike wherever you can. Share rides. You’ll wind up making a new friend or getting some exercise ā€” a win-win if you ask us. šŸš²

All right, fam. Take one. Pass it on.
