Edition 61: 5 ways to reduce your personal carbon footprint for Earth Day 👣

“There is still a window of time. Nature can win if we give her a chance.”

– Dr. Jane Goodall

Happy Earth Day, Daybreaker Fam!

Before we dive in fully, be sure to scroll down for our Earth Day-inspired Mischief Mission. We’re reducing our carbon footprints this week (hint: it involves bamboo toothbrushes, clotheslines and more bikes). 🚲The stats out there are sobering, but we’re inspired to rise up by creating more sustainable versions of ourselves. How ’bout we do it together?

Ok, onwards! This week, we warmed up Amsterdam for King’s Day. In the spirit of mischief, we danced underground, beneath the city’s busiest railway. We even heard a train or two between beat drops. 😂 #UndergroundDanceParty

Current status: party-hopping on three U.S. college campuses. Yesterday, we shared Daybreaker CAMPUS with students at University of Minnesota and Penn State University. Today, we’re back at Wharton UPENN (our second time there!). 🎉 It’s been nothing short of inspiring, watching our future leaders sweat and connect in a way that in prior years, seemed unlikely for the college experience. Thanks to everyone who’s shown so much support for this movement of ours, we’re slowly (but surely) shifting the “norm” to something much more uplifting. ✨

All right, fam. Keep scrolling for this week’s Dancefloor Tale, our special Earth Day Noodles Edition, upcoming events, and tunes. 🎧

With love & mischief,
// Team Daybreaker

✨AND AS IT TURNED OUT, THERE WAS ANOTHER WAY✨

My favorite thing about Daybreaker isn’t something that can be summed up in one story. I found the community during the summer of 2016. I was midway through a commitment to a year of no alcohol because I had wanted to push myself and find new ways to have fun. I was bored at work, and looking for fun things to do sober…and what do you know? Daybreaker Week comes to my attention. Me, being an adventurer, just said “F-yes” and bought passes for 3 events during the week.

The week arrives and I go to the House of Yes for my first Daybreaker…and it was AWESOME. 🎉 I do partner yoga with a mother who was a lot older than me, then we all dance like crazy. I even get in the dance circle, wearing my favorite pair of sweatpants, and my treasured black Metallica shirt to dance and roll (literally, I hit the ground and roll) out of it.

I felt so liberated that day. This idea I’d been carrying since I’d graduated from college that there had to be a more fun way to live without depending on getting messed up — it turned out to be real. And possible. I was so inspired seeing everyone in that room going hard. I was inspired by the courage of people getting up on stage to dance, too. It was just the most unbelievably crazy awesome thing I’d ever seen.

Fast forward to a year and a half later, and now I’m one of the Mischief Makers, spending way more time than I ever thought I would picking out outfits to show off my spirit for the next party hahahahaha. I love it. I really do.✨

With love & mischief,
// Matthew

🍲EARTH DAY NOODLES🍲

Every day, Mother Earth provides a home for 7.6 billion humans, about 10 quintillion (10,000,000,000,000,000,000) insects, 20 quintillion animals and 390,900 species of plants (with trillions more we don’t even know about yet).

Ummm, we’re feelin’ like we owe Mama Earth a rather rad spa package for Earth Day this year.🙌 OR….

What would happen if we all implemented one tiny sustainable change? And then repeated it. Every day. Then what if we shared our new habit with 5 friends, who then shared with 5 friends and so on? This could be yet another way the power of community can come together to inspire radical change.

So! Mischief Mission, Mother Earth Edition🌍 — pick something from the list below. Act on it. Share it with 5 friends.

4 EASY WAYS TO REDUCE YOUR CARBON FOOTPRINT FOR EARTH DAY TODAY 👣

// Unplug your devices when not in use. Even if your electronic is powered down, as long as the cord is in the socket — it’s using energy. Every year in the U.S. alone, “vampire power” drains up $19 billion in energy. So. Computers, phones, toaster, anything — unplug it anytime it’s not actually in use. 🔌

// Order less takeout + use a bamboo toothbrush. These are easy ways to reduce the amount of plastic you use. Instead of ordering takeout (that comes in plastic errythang), get cozy with some friends, try your hand at a new recipe. Then show off your cool new plastic-less toothbrush.😁

// Line Dry Your Clothes. Our clothes dryers are one of the most energy-consuming appliances in existence. Running one is the equivalent of turning on 225 light bulbs for an hour. Eeek. What’s an easy way to spare your clothes from contributing to your carbon footprint? Line dry ’em. I mean, it’s kinda more fun that way, anyway. 👕👚👗

// Bike, walk, share a ride! Every gallon of gas burned from your car releases 24 pounds of CO2 into the atmosphere. Transportation is accounting for nearly a third of the annual carbon dioxide emissions in the U.S. Sooo opt to power walk the 10 blocks instead of flagging down that taxi. Rent a bike wherever you can. Share rides. You’ll wind up making a new friend or getting some exercise — a win-win if you ask us. 🚲

All right, fam. Take one. Pass it on.
